Install Nvidia Drivers on Ubuntu

purpose


This article gives the steps to replace the open-source nouveau video drivers with true Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS

prerequisites

  • ubuntu 14.04.x | ubuntu 16.04.x

Install Nvidia Drivers

I. Download Nvidia Driver http://www.geforce.com/drivers

  • Make executable

sudo chmod +x ~/Downloads/NVIDIA…run

II. Update to Latest Kernel (Optional)

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

III. Remove Unwanted Drivers

sudo apt-get remove nvidia* && sudo apt-get auto remove

iV. Disable Nouveau Driver

  • Create/Edit blacklist file

sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

  • Add the following lines and save

blacklist nouveau

blacklist lbm-nouveau

options nouveau modeset=0

alias nouveau off

alias lbm-nouveau off

  • Disable the Kernel Nouveau

echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf

sudo update-initramfs -u

V. Reboot

sudo reboot

Vi. Install Dependencies

sudo apt-get install dkms fakeroot build-essential linux-headers-generic

Vii. Stop LightDM

  • Stop the Desktop Manager

sudo service lightdm stop

Viii. Run Install

  • Run the Nvidia install script

sudo ./NVIDIA….run

  • Select Accept
  • Select Yes to Kernel DKMS
  • Select Ok if prompts that no 32-bit compatibility.
  • Select Yes to configuration X
